Freshly baked gingerbread, poured into a cup.

At its heart is rooibos, the red bush that grows in only one place on Earth: the sun-scorched Cederberg mountains of South Africa. Around it we gather spices from five corners of the old spice routes, composed by hand in small batches and here only for the longest nights of the year.

Lift the lid and the room fills with the scent of a bakery at midnight. Warm ginger, sweet-hot cinnamon and the bright perfume of crushed cardamom rise with the steam. The first sip is round and buttery, a gingersnap still warm from the oven, softened with vanilla and finished with a whisper of clove. It pours the color of polished cedar and lingers like the glow of a fire burning low. Naturally caffeine-free, it keeps you company deep into the night, through one more story and one more cup.

I wanted the smell of a holiday kitchen at midnight, when the house is quiet and the cookies are cooling. Rooibos gives me a naturally sweet, caffeine-free base, so this is a chai you can pour for everyone at the table, late into the night. I layered two cinnamons on purpose: bold Saigon for heat, delicate Ceylon for perfume. Cardamom is the secret; it lifts the whole cup.

— Zhena Muzyka, Master Blender

Ritual: Dusk (PM)

Mood: Cozy, grounded, nostalgic

Caffeine: None. Naturally caffeine-free

Pour it at dusk, when the candles are lit and the cookies are cooling. Naturally caffeine-free, it suits the evening hours: after dinner, through a long conversation by the fire, or as the last cup before bed on the longest nights of the year.

The Ritual: Light the Longest Night

On the evening of the solstice, dim the lights and light a single candle. As the tea steeps, think of one thing that warmed you this year. Pour a cup for everyone at the table and go around the circle, each sharing their own. Sip slowly and welcome the light's return.

Steep 1 tsp per 8 oz cup in 200–212°F water for 3–5 minutes. Sip on its own or add your favorite frothed milk for a cozy gingerbread chai latte to share.

The Recipe: Gingerbread Chai Latte

Froth into a gingerbread chai latte to share

Steep 2 tsp of Starlight Spice in 4 oz of water just off the boil for 5 minutes, then strain.

Stir in 1 tsp of maple syrup or honey, if you like it sweeter.

Froth 6 oz of your favorite milk until velvety and pour it over the tea.

Finish with a dusting of cinnamon and serve with a gingersnap on the side.

Rare origin: rooibos grows in only one region on Earth.

Plant allies: ginger, cardamom and cinnamon from Ayurveda; clove and nutmeg from the legendary Spice Islands, once worth more than gold.

Ritual: a dusk tea for the solstice, when the longest night turns and the light begins its return.

Intention: gather, linger, share one more cup.

Astroherbology: ruled by the Sun

Astro alignment: The Sun, with Jupiter and Mars · Element: Fire

Cinnamon belongs to the Sun, the fire of the returning light: a fitting ruler for a blend made for the solstice, the day the Sun begins its return.

Clove and nutmeg are given to Jupiter, planet of abundance and generosity, the spirit of the holiday table.

Ginger and pink peppercorn belong to Mars, the fire that warms from within.

Blue cornflower is Saturn's. The herbalist Nicholas Culpeper placed it "under the dominion of Saturn" in 1653. Saturn rules Capricorn, whose season begins on the winter solstice itself.

Element: Fire. Every spice in the blend carries the fire element, warmth for the coldest nights.

Origins: Rooibos, South Africa · Cinnamon, Vietnam · Cinnamon powder, Ceylon (Sri Lanka) · Cardamom, Guatemala · Cloves, Madagascar · Nutmeg, Indonesia · Ginger, India · Pink peppercorn, Brazil · Blue cornflower, Albania

A wooden spoon filled with dried green cardamom pods rests on a black surface. Additional cardamom pods are scattered around the spoon. The image captures the textured, pale green pods in sharp detail.
Crushed Cardamom

Zhena's secret, the spice that lifts the whole cup. Grown in the highlands of Guatemala and crushed to release its bright, resinous perfume, cardamom has long been valued in Ayurveda as a warming, uplifting spice, a treasure carried along the old spice routes.

Saigon & Ceylon Cinnamon

Two cinnamons, layered on purpose. Bold Saigon cinnamon from Vietnam brings the heat; delicate Ceylon from Sri Lanka brings the perfume. In astroherbology cinnamon belongs to the Sun, a fitting ally for the day the light begins its return, and laboratory research shows it has antioxidant activity.

How to Steep Loose Leaf Tea

What is Tea Ceremony?

FAQ

Yes, all of our teas undergo rigorous third-party testing to ensure they meet the highest standards for quality, purity, and safety. We proudly hold certifications for each blend, so you can sip confidently, knowing that our teas are crafted with care and integrity.

Our teas are cultivated, harvested, and blended from soil to cup with the Magic Hour Rule of Love. The base of our teas is grown in the tea estate where I was married :)! The exquisite buds are grown and harvested by our friends in a garden that touches the sky at the top of the mountains in the high-country of Sri Lanka. The pristine Idulgashinna Bio Tea Garden’s perched above a wildlife preserve. It was the first tea garden to become certified Biodynamic and organic in the world, it’s home to our family of farmers and growers whose respect towards nature and one another has become the gold standard of tea estates all over the world. We also source from small organic family gardens in Taiwan, Rwanda, India, Yunnan, Kyoto and Kagoshima, Japan.

Our formulator, Zhena, is an aromatherapist and was one of the founders of the Organic and Fair Trade movement over 25 years ago. She was crucial in getting rules for organics passed and has had a long-time passion for organics, Biodynamics, and pure products. Her blending style is bold, and she uses Organic-Compliant extracts of fruits, essential oils, and spices that fall under the "Natural Flavors" broad-stroke ingredient description by the FDA. We only use extracts and flavors extracted with non-toxic methods, and they are 100% natural, coming from the fruit, spice, or flower that is distilled without chemicals.

Other companies may use "Natural Flavors" that are in a Propylene Glycol base, Zhena fought the label standards on this chemical 15 years ago and is dedicated to NEVER using flavorings with this or any other chemicals. Our flavors are entirely extracted naturally using alcohol or steam distillation. In the blending process, if the extract has alcohol, the alcohol dissipates. If you've ever used vanilla extract for cooking, you've used what Zhena uses in larger volumes.

When we write "Natural Flavors," it's not because we want to, but that's what the FDA requires. It's not a great description, and we assure you our standards are of the highest, using only natural extracts and essential oils.

Please feel free to enjoy most of our teas without worry regarding being vegan compliant.
As of May of 2021, the only tea we have that is not vegan is Quintessence, which contains honey crystals.

You could steep our teas many times. A new flavor nuance will arise each time. If you’re planning to steep more than twice, you might want to add an additional teaspoon or two according to taste and the strength desired.

It's a common misconception that tea ceremony has to take up a lot of time from your schedule. I want to encourage you to take time for yourself, daily, in a simple tea ceremony. Simply naming 3 gratitudes as your water boils will uplift and shift your day!

However, the process only has to take as little as 10 minutes! For example, for most of our teas we suggest steeping 1 heaping teaspoon in water that is between 160--212 degrees (depending on the tea type--check the label!). As you steep your tea for the recommended minutes, take 3 heart-breaths, expanding the emerald green energy of your heart chakra. As you expand that blessed energy, you will activate your true intelligence which is found in the heart.

Then as you steep your loose-leaf magical tea, center into your senses. As yourself the Magic Hour sensory questions:

  • What do I hear?
  • What do I see?
  • What do I feel?
  • What do I smell?
  • What do I taste?

Then sip your tea with newfound presence.

Presence is where heaven is found. We want you to find your heaven on a daily basis!
