The Difference Between Matcha & White Tea

Posted by Staff Writer on

Camellia Sinesis plant is the source of both matcha and white tea. Green matcha goes through more oxidation processes than white tea and both types of teas are prepared and offered differently. They are believed to be good for you, however, white tea is more expensive and less common. Plus, their leaves and bud profiles differ from each other.

If you want to try matcha and white tea but are not sure which one is better for you, here is an article comparing matcha vs white tea!

Basis of Matcha and White Tea

Both matcha and white tea are produced from the same tea plant. The plant’s first bloom of tea shoots and unopened buds lead to the production of white tea. Matcha, on the other hand, is created from the plant’s tender leaves collected after protecting them against sunlight weeks before harvesting.

Additionally, the process of making matcha is very similar to that of green tea, except for the last step. Tea leaves are crushed into fine powder. This final process is why it’s called “matcha”, the ground tea.

Availability of Matcha and White Tea

You will not find white tea as easily as other popular teas due to its intricate and delicate brewing methods. But you can always order premium white tea from us to reap the benefits. Matcha, however, is widely found and comes in many fancy drinks served in cafes and restaurants.

Which Has More Caffeine?

A cup of premium white tea contains 15 to 30 mg of caffeine, while a matcha cup standardly brewed with matcha powder of 4 teaspoons has only 280 mg. Matcha is ground to a fine powder and ingested whole. Therefore, it contains more caffeine in comparison to white tea.

Matcha Vs White Tea Antioxidants

Matcha and white tea both contain a potent mixture of antioxidants. But, a great quality premium matcha tea has three times as many antioxidants as green tea. So, if antioxidants are your priority, opting for a cup of premium matcha tea might be the better option.

Texture and Flavor

White tea has a flavor profile that has been described as floral, honey-like, grassy, fruity (peach, melon, apricot, citrus), and chocolatey. It also has a delicate, subtle, vanilla, mild, and sweet flavor profile.

On the other hand, matcha has a smooth, grassy, vegetal, and nutty sweet flavor profile. It also has a texture that is thicker and creamier, giving off a heavier taste rather than gentle and light white tea with a silky texture.

Affordability of Both Teas

Both matcha and white tea are comparably priced, but white tea can be harder to come by and so it may sometimes cost more. However, it is important to note that high-quality matcha from a reputable brand can cost the same as or more than white tea. Both have wonderful health benefits.
