Black Tea for Bone Health

Posted by Ashley Davis on

Black tea, a common drink in China, was first popularized in 1590 under the Ming Dynasty. When Dutch traders brought this tea from China to Europe in the 16th century, it gained popularity. It arrived in England around 1658, and by 1700, the American colonies there were enjoying its popularity. The British established a tea plantation in Darjeeling, India, in 1835, due to the growing demand. There are now varieties of teas available to suit your needs and lifestyle.

Because tea's popularity has spread worldwide you can now buy premium black tea blends online or in stores everywhere. With the rise in popularity, there have been many words about the beneficial properties of black tea for bones. The real question, though, that this article answers is whether or not drinking black tea will help you build stronger bones.

May Help to Treat Osteoporosis

Black tea has the ability to treat osteoporosis, according to a Japanese study. Black tea can help people beat osteoporosis, a disease that weakens the bones in the body; and as a result, increases the likelihood of fractures.

According to Keizo Nishikawa's research at Osaka University, black tea contains a powerful antioxidant known as theaflavin-3 (TF-3). This report, which stated that the theaflavin-3 antioxidant improved bone structures in mice with osteoporosis, was published in February 2015 in the US journal Nature Medicine.

Reduce the Risk of Hip Fractures

A different piece of research that was carried out by researchers from the Royal Perth Hospital, the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, and the Flinders University of South Australia in Adelaide produced results that were also comparable.

According to the findings of this study, consuming three cups of black tea per day can reduce the risk of hip fracture by almost a third.

Over the course of ten years, approximately 1200 women in their 70s were questioned about their tea consumption habits. Out of the total, 288 women fell and broke a bone; and nearly half of them were hip fractures.

On the other hand, a hip fracture was 30% less likely to occur in those who drank three or more cups of black tea per day.

Helps Maintain Healthy Teeth and Bones

The presence of fluoride in black tea also benefits consumers who purchase it. Additionally, fluoride significantly aids in the maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. Fluoride levels range from 0.2 to 0.5 milligrams per cup of black tea; what's more, can assist with forestalling holes in teeth and make them more grounded.

A Myriad of Benefits of Black Tea

In addition to strengthening teeth and bones, black tea has the following advantages:

  • This can help improve heart health and prevent cardiovascular diseases if consumed daily.
  • Tannin agents also have the ability to heal digestive issues as well as improve digestion.
  • Tea can lower levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) when taken daily. Last but not least, it aids in the fight against cancer, particularly breast cancer.
